Hexagons

Personally, I like hexagons. They come together in perfectly tesselating formations, with three of them meeting in perfect unison like the symbol of a Mercedes-Benz. They are perfect for grids, for isometric planning, for wargames and peacegames. They're a bit complicated as maps of human interaction, but once you see them as projections of the octahedral they are fine.

So hexagons are both comic and tragic, since they're even but clearly tied inextricably to the number three?

It's more subtle than that. If you try to reduce them by triads (i.e. see them as tragic), they turn into dyads and are therefore comic. If you try to reduce them by dyads (i.e. see them as comic), they turn into triads and are therefore tragic.

But I think that pairing up essentially is comic, and since the lowest factor is 2, a hexagon is on the balance a light-hearted thing.
